Best SIF Funds in India: How to Actually Compare Them

Most "best SIF funds" lists are a static top-5 that goes stale the moment a new NAV prints. Here's how to find the real current leaders — and what to weigh besides trailing returns before you decide.

Searching for the "best SIF" in India turns up dozens of near-identical blog lists, and most of them name the same handful of funds without saying how they picked them — or when the list was last checked against live NAVs. Specialized Investment Funds are still a new category in India, with most schemes carrying well under two years of track record, so a one-time ranking is misleading almost as soon as it's published.

This page won't give you a fixed top 5. Instead, here's how to find the actual current leaders yourself, and what else is worth checking before "best performing" becomes "best for you."

Why a static "top 5" list is the wrong tool

A SIF's trailing return changes with every NAV update — daily for most schemes. A list written in one month and never revisited can easily be ranking funds on numbers that are no longer true, especially this early in the category's life when a single strong or weak month can swing a fund's Since Inception return meaningfully. If a page doesn't tell you the "as of" date behind its numbers, treat the ranking with caution.

See today's actual leaders

SIF India's own data updates daily from each AMC's NAV disclosure, so instead of a fixed list, use the live tools:

  • Performance Dashboard — category-wise leaderboards (equity long-short, hybrid long-short, debt long-short, and more) so you're comparing funds against peers running a similar strategy, not against the whole market.
  • SIF Screener, sorted by return — every tracked SIF ranked by Since Inception return; swap to 1-Year return once a fund has enough history for that window to mean something.
  • SIF vs Nifty — see whether a category's returns are actually beating a plain Nifty market-cap index, or just beating other SIFs in a down market.

Because these pull from the same database every page on this site reads, the numbers you see match what's on each fund's own page — not a snapshot frozen at publish time.

What "best" should weigh besides trailing returns

A high Since-Inception number from a fund that launched into a favorable few months isn't the same thing as a well-run strategy. Before shortlisting purely on returns, check:

  1. Track record length. A fund six months old with one strong quarter has a very different confidence level than one approaching its third year. Favor funds you can evaluate across at least one full market cycle where possible.
  2. Net exposure and strategy, not just the category label. Two "equity long-short" SIFs can run very different net market exposure — see how to read a SIF's portfolio disclosure for how to check this from the actual holdings.
  3. Costs. Expense ratio and exit load eat into whatever return a fund posts. The Costs page lists Direct and Regular expense ratios and exit load terms side by side for every scheme.
  4. Risk band, read correctly. Most SIFs sit in the same "Very High" risk-o-meter band as a small-cap mutual fund, but the source of that risk differs — see the risk-o-meter and SIFs, explained.
  5. AUM and liquidity. A very small, young fund can see return figures move sharply on comparatively small flows. Check AUM on the SIF screener alongside the return numbers.
  6. The fund manager's track record elsewhere. SIF India's fund manager directory links every manager to every mandate they run, so you can see if they've handled a long-short book before this one.

Put your shortlist side by side

Once you've narrowed it down using the checks above, add up to four funds to the comparison engine to see NAV, returns across every period, AUM, expense ratio, exit load, and risk-o-meter in one table — the same comparison a "best of" list is trying to summarize for you, except current and specific to the funds you actually care about.
